FUSED DEPOSITION MODELLINGFDM generates models by extruding a controlled bead of molten polymer through a fine nozzle. Each section through the model is plotted at typically 0.15mm intervals. A support structure is simultaneously formed which is removed by hand after the model is completed. Although models show a slight stepping effect they are dimensionally accurate, stable when exposed to light or water, and can be easily hand finished to produce a smooth paintable surface. Models may be built from ABS or Polycarbonate materials.

A functional FDM model in ABS or Polycarbonate plastic enables a design to be easily evaluated. Both are process materials with good mechanical properties which will show a design limitation rather than a compromised material weakness |  |
