FUSED DEPOSITION MODELLING
FDM generates models by extruding a controlled
bead of molten polymer through a fine nozzle. Each section through the model
is plotted at typically 0.15mm intervals. A support structure is simultaneously
formed which is removed by hand after the model is completed. Although models show a
slight stepping effect they are dimensionally accurate, stable when exposed to
light or water, and can be easily hand finished to produce a smooth paintable
surface. Models may be built from ABS or Polycarbonate materials.
